As the heading says, welcome to the percussion section! We’re easily the best section in the MOB (we hit things; what else could you ask for?), and we’re happy you decided to join our ranks.

You might be thinking, Wow! “Percussion” is such a broad category! What can I play to be a part of this section, especially since we’re often out on the field? Well, I’m glad you asked. We’ll gladly accept any of the following instruments:

  • Snare Drums
  • Bass Drums
  • Tenors [Quads, quints, whatever (we draw the line at tri-toms, though… kidding)]
  • Cymbals
  • Mallets (xylophones, glockenspiels, yadda, yadda…)
  • Cowbells
  • Gongs, especially for Morose Wombat, er, Mortal Kombat
  • Slapsticks
  • Steel Drums
  • Those two toilet paper tubes you found outside on the way to the band hall
  • Basically anything you can hit (not other people, though, please)

I’m sure you’re wondering what else is required to be a part of the Percussion Army. Great news: there are no other prerequisites. Even if you have no experience, we’ll gladly welcome you to our section with open arms. <3

Percussion isn’t just about hitting things, though. We’re family in the percussion section, so we like to do many fun things together. Here are just a few examples:

  • Section Supper™, where we dine together, both on campus and throughout Houston
  • IHOP Expeditions and Boba Runs after games
  • Protest the unjust abuses we endure as percussionists (we’re looking at you, sixteenth notes) through picketing
  • Play tags and cadences to assert our dominance over other MOBsters
  • Go on field trips to other campuses to remind them who’s the best

What do you say? Do you want to be with the best section the MOB has to offer? Hit things with sticks? Take out your pent-up anger from that exam you had last week? Spend time with new, lifelong friends? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, then the percussion section might be for you! Come and join us! We’re happy to have you!
