My name is Stanford Johnson, and I’m the MOB’s reeds section leader. I love to play the clarinet, and I talk a lot during the game. First off, congratulations on being accepted into Rice! Here, MOB (Marching Owl Band) is a fun-loving, inclusive performing community. Everyone has a place here at the MOB, from people who love to play their instruments to creative actors. We do not hold auditions and welcome all instruments: piano, kazoo, guitar, fiddle, Uilleann Pipes, it doesn’t matter.
The reeds section in particular is are smooth and unhinged group! We usually set up a weekly meal meet-up (based on everyone’s schedules) around campus, and I’m currently working on a few ideas for our section to plan throughout the semester
One of the coolest aspects of the MOB is that everything is optional, and we’re not a traditional college band. Instead of marching in some type of precise formations, we chaotically and cheerfully move to locations. As for the optional portion, if you’re having a busy week with exams, homework, and FWIS paper being due 😭. Don’t worry, no one is judging you if you can’t come. Every member of MOB has been in your position and understands that schoolwork comes first. The MOB should be where you can hang out and relieve your stress, not add to it.
Finally, as a MOBster, you can have the chance to write scripts, make costumes, act, and build props to bring in halftime and pregame show to life on the field. We love to make skits to make fun of the opponent, and additional gigs that can come up during the school year.
If you have any questions at all about the MOB, Rice, dorm life, Academic Scheduling ( I’m the Duncan O-Week PAA 🤠), anything!! I’m more than happy to chat!
Best,
Stanford Johnson, Duncan 2028
